character and costume sketches, early 90's: Ligeti and Roussel
The first five images here going left to right are from an early attempt at costume and stage design, for the opera LE GRAND MACABRE by Gyorgy Ligeti which at that point I had never even heard. I had the libretto, though.
The other paintings are selected from my effort to derive a linear narrative from Raymond Roussel's IMPRESSIONS D'AFRIQUE, which I managed to do by creating depictions of all the characters, over 100. Truly the novel is experimental in more than just the structure of its story, of course. It is perhaps worth noting that Roussel dreamed of staging the novel as a theatrical piece. Such an undertaking would require far more complexity than is here attempted!
